Investor Daily, Jakarta – Municipally-owned land transportation company Transportasi Jakarta, or TransJakarta, has acquired 100 electric buses throughout this year and plans to buy more in the coming years.

Transjakarta President Director Welfizon Yuza said over the weekend that 74 electric buses had entered services while the remaining 26 will become operational later this month.

"TransJakarta functions to reduce traffic loads by encouraging people to switch from their vehicles to this public transport," Welfizon said during a visit to Thousand Island Regency.

By using electric vehicle fleets, TransJakarta also reduces air pollution, he added.

The daily number of TransJakarta passengers averages 1.1 million and is expected to grow with the arrival of electric buses.

The company is also renovating 45 bus stations across the capital city to accommodate more passengers at a cost of Rp 600 billion ($38.7 million).

TransJakarta has targeted to replace 50 percent of its entire fleet with electric buses by 2027, before going full electric by 2030, when it aims to operate 10,000 buses.
