Riri Rahayu, Jakarta – The Indonesian Coordinating Ministry for Maritime and Investment Affairs denied claims that Tesla withdrew its investment plan in Indonesia. According to the ministry's Deputy of Investment and Mining Coordination Septian Hari Seto, Tesla's investment was only being postponed.
"[The investment plan] is on-going. But with the current global economic conditions, I believe [Elon Musk] is putting investment on hold," he said when met in between Tempo Electric Vehicle (EV) and Battery Conference in Jakarta on Tuesday, Nov. 21, 2023.
Tesla, he said, also postponed its investment plan in other countries besides Indonesia. "I heard the factory [development] plan in Mexico was also being postponed," he added.
Last year, the Coordinating Minister for Maritime and Investment Affairs Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan claimed that Elon Musk was interested in nickel investment in Indonesia after both men met.
"The most relieving [thing] for me was when Elon conveyed the reason for his interest to cooperate this time was my presentation concerning the huge potential of Indonesia's nickel industry which changed his perspective," he said on Tuesday, April 26, 2022.
According to Luhut, Elon Musk found Indonesia's nickel industry to be promising in terms of supplying his company with raw materials for electric car batteries.
