Amy Heppy, Jakarta – Indonesian Minister of State-Owned Enterprises (SOE) Erick Thohir said many people, especially millennials, do not have a house. He made the statement when attending the mass contract signing of BTN housing loans (KPR) at Puri Delta Tigaraksa Housing Complex, Tangerang Regency on Tuesday, August 8, 2023.

"Director General [for Housing at the Public Works and Housing or PUPR Ministry] said 12.7 million families hope to have a home. Other data show that 81 million millennials, the young people, don't have a home yet," Erick said.

Therefore, he expected all parties, including the government, SOEs, state-owned house developer Perumnas, and private parties, can collaborate in supporting the government's program to create housing for the community.

Erick also encouraged Perumnas to build vertical housing considering Indonesia as an archipelagic country. "One of the things we encourage Perumnas is to build integrated housing areas but not landed, but multi-story housing complex," he added.

According to Erick Thohir, the residence complex can be equipped with several facilities such as sports venues, swimming pools, health clinics, and entertainment areas.

Director General for Housing of the PUPR Ministry, Iwan Suprijanto, said that based on the 2020-2024 National Medium Term Development Plan (RPJMN), the government is targeting to increase access to livable houses from 56 percent to 70 percent in 2024.

Iwan further mentioned that the government's one million house program was entirely satisfactory. In 2015-2022, 7.98 million new houses were developed. "In July 2023, 480,438 units were built," he added.
