Maria Fransisca Lahur, Jakarta – The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) predicted that there will be lesser rainfall intensity this year compared to the previous three years, which experienced intense rainfall as an effect of La Nina.

BMKG Head Dwikorita Karnawati said that the condition we would be facing in the near future will likely resemble 2018.

"The dry season this year will be dryer than the last three years. We predicted that it will resemble 2018," Dwikorita explained on Friday, January 27, 2023.

BMKG urged members of the public to save water in preparation for the drought.

Dwikorita said that the agency had coordinated with a number of state agencies and Ministries – to carry out attempts on weather modifications – such as the Environment and Forestry Ministry (KLHK), the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB), and the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN).

BMKG's head of climate information Ardhasena Sopaheluwakan said that the next six months will be dominated by 'normal-intensity' rainfall.

It should be noted that throughout March-April-May, several areas in Java, Bali, and Nusa Tenggara will experience a transitional period from the rainy season to the dry season. Therefore, it is necessary to be aware of extreme weather phenomena that often appear, such as heavy rains, tornadoes, and strong winds, which, although the periods are short, often trigger hydrometeorological disasters.
