Jakarta – Golkar will continue to nominate party chairman Airlangga Hartarto following the decision to recruit popular West Java Governor Ridwan Kamil as the party's new deputy chairman earlier this week.
Senior lawmaker and chair or Golkar's West Java provincial branch Ace Hasan Syadzily said on Thursday that Ridwan has supported the party's decision to back Airlangga in the 2024 presidential race.
"Pak Ridwan knows his place in Golkar. He will follow the party's directive... He has also committed to campaign for Pak Airlangga's victory in the election," Ace said, quoted by Antara.
The senior Golkar politician also said that there had been no discussion on the possibility of choosing Ridwan as Airlangga's vice-presidential pick.
"As Pak Airlangga himself said, it will be discussed when the time is appropriate," Ace said.
Earlier this week, Ridwan, who has risen to the top in the race for the vice-presidential seat in many recent polls, officially joined the Golkar Party.
In a ceremony to announce his move to join Golkar, Ridwan affirmed that he would support the party's decision in campaigning for Airlangga as president, especially after he was appointed co-chair of the party's electoral committee and deputy chairman.
Analysts have said that Ridwan's move to join Golkar could be a strategy for a long-term bid for 2029.
