Jayapura, Jubi – The Papua Police announced nine areas prone to riots following the arrest of Papua Governor Lukas Enembe by the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) in Jayapura City on Tuesday, January 10, 2023. Jayapura Regency and Jayapura City are on the list.

Other areas that are considered to potentially have security disturbances are Bintang Mountains Regency, Yahukimo Regency, Nduga Regency, Puncak Regency, Dogiyai Regency, Paniai Regency, and Intan Jaya Regency.

"Currently, we pay more attention to these areas to monitor the security situation. Hopefully, the situation will be better soon," said Papua Police chief Insp. Gen. Mathius D Fakhiri in Jayapura City on Wednesday.

Fakhiri said the National Police Chief had prepared 1,000 mobile brigades. These officers from outside Papua will be deployed to Papua responding to an escalation of disturbances in the region.

"I have discussed this with the Police Chief. The personnel prepared were separated from the Cartenz Peace Task Force and Rasaka Cartenz," he said.

Fakhiri said that in the near future his party would evaluate all security disturbances that occurred in Papua. The evaluation is expected to formulate initial support that can help strengthen police's presence in nine vulnerable areas.

Meanwhile, Jayapura City Police chief Sr. Comr. Victor Dean Mackbon said the situation in Jayapura City is safe and conducive after the arrest of Governor Lukas Enembe by KPK on Tuesday afternoon at a restaurant.

Mackbon said when Lukas Enembe was taken to the Mobile Brigade Headquarters, there was a small group that tried to obstruct but police managed to handle it. (*)
