Wahyoe Boediwardhana, Surabaya – Surabaya city administration and the Transportation Ministry launched on Tuesday 17 electric buses to ply one of the city's bus routes.
The buses are grants from the ministry. The vehicles were first used as transportation during the Group of 20 Summit in Nusa Dua, Bali, last month.
"Hopefully, these buses will help decrease emission in Greater Surabaya," Suharto, the ministry's director for road transportation, said on the sidelines of the launching in Surabaya, East Java.
Suharto said that the city will get 17 more of the 28-passenger buses in the next delivery. The ministry is also granting buses to the city of Bandung, West Java.
"We are currently producing 53 more electric buses that will be operated in Surabaya and Bandung, but most will be in Surabaya," he said.
Surabaya Mayor Eri Cahyadi said that the administration plans to replace all of the city buses in Trans Semanggi bus service with electric ones in stages.
"We are also preparing electric feeder service for the buses in 2024," Eri said. (dre)
