Antara, Riani Sanusi Putri, Jakarta – A representative for the Ministry of Agriculture on Wednesday said the government deemed the foot and mouth disease (FMD) has spread across 21 provinces in Indonesia and affects over 300,000 cattle in 232 regencies and cities.

"The number of livestock infected by this disease to date is 320,016," said the Ministry's directorate general of agriculture and livestock health secretary Makmun on July 6, Antaranews reported.

Out of this number, 2,029 have reportedly died, 2,820 went to animal slaughter under strict requirements, and 108,266 had recovered from the disease. The Agriculture Ministry logged vaccination scope against FMD reached 337,976 livestock.

Head of the Ministry's Animal Quarantine Center, Wisnu Wasisa Putra, said that there are three islands in Indonesia that are classified as red zones for the spread of PMK that comprises Java, Sumatra, and Lombok.

Chairman of the Association of Indonesian Cattle and Buffalo Breeders (PPSKI) Nanang Purus Subendro said the number of FMD cases in the field was much higher than official data from the Ministry of Agriculture. He said his team recorded the number of livestock infected with FMD reached ten times higher than what the government recorded.

"Our estimate is no less than 10 times the official one," said Nanang, at the end of June.
