Jakarta – Indonesian Anti-Corruption Society (MAKI) Coordinator Boyamin Saiman says that Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) Deputy Chairperson Lili Pintauli Siregar has become the focus and even the laughingstock of the world because of the ethical violations she has committed.

Saiman expressed this view in response a report on human rights practices in Indonesia which was released by the United States Foreign Affairs Department several days ago.

In the report titled "2021 Country Reports on Human Rights Practices: Indonesia", one of the issues which was highlighted was the decision by the KPK's Supervisory Board on the ethical violations by Siregar.

In the report the US stated that Siregar had been proven to have committed ethical violations on August 30, 2021 after having contact with a party involved in a bribery case the KPK was handling, namely the former Tanjungbalai mayor.

Siregar was found to have taken advantage of her position and was sentenced to a 40 percent cut in her basic wage.

According to Saiman, the US report is important and Siregar should immediacy resign from her post as KPK deputy chairperson because she has now become the subject of international attention.

"I ask, I pled with Bu [Mrs] Lili to resign from the KPK because this will continue to be the focus of modern countries, other countries, and a public focus because Bu Lili is no longer of any use or benefit to the KPK", said Saiman.

"In simple language, Lili Pintauli Siregar's shameless behaviour has become the laughingstock of the international community because she had been found guilty of committing ethical violations but then went and committed them again", said Saiman in a written release on Sunday April 17.

Indonesia Corruption Watch (ICW) meanwhile said that Siregar can no longer just be indicted for alleged violations of the ethical code afer she recently receiving a free ticket to attend the Mandalika MotoGP race in Lombok.

This is because this is not the first time the former Witness and Victim Protection Agency (LPSK) deputy chairperson has committed ethical violations.

Moreover the KPK Supervisory Board once declared that Siregar had committed gross violations of the ethics code. This is why ICW is surprised that Siregar's name has again come up in a similar case.

"Because, the track record of the person concerned is indeed problematic, particularly after her communication with a party involved in a KPK case was exposed to the public", said ICW researcher Kurnia Ramadhana on April 13.

According to Ramadhana, the free ticket Siregar received could be deemed as gratification if it not reported to the anti-graft agency.

"This action clearly violated Article 12b of the Tipikor Law [Corruption Court Law] and the KPK deputy chairperson could be subject to 20 years in prison or even a life sentence", he said.

Second, the acceptance of the ticket could be considered as a bribe if the party that gave it to her communicated with Siregar and developed an agreement on a certain problem, such as for example dealing with a problem at the KPK. This also clearly violates Article 12 and is subject to the same sentence.

"Third, the acceptance could be considered as extortion if Lili made a threat against the party giving it with enticements of dealing with a case [at the KPK]. Such actions meet the elements of Article 12e of the Tipikor Law which are subject to 20 years in prison or even a life sentence", he reiterated.
