Russell Searancke – Privately-owned operator Timor Resources said it has made an oil and gas discovery in Timor-Leste with the first of two planned onshore exploration wells.

In a brief statement, the operator said the discovery comprised oil and gas, and that Schlumberger had run wireline logs on the well to help measure the amount of oil and gas discovered.

Timor Resources did not disclose any additional well data, saying only that the discovery "represented the first find from the contract area".

The rig has moved to the next well location, in readiness to spud the second exploration well before Christmas, which is understood to be called Liurai.

The operator and its JV partner Timor Gap spudded the Feto Kmaus exploration well on 27 October in Block PSC TL OT 17 08 in the region of Suai.

Australian company Eastern Drilling is providing the drilling rig and operations team.

Other contractors include Schlumberger, Parama Data Unit, Matra Unikatama, Petroil, Saga Trade, York Transport and OTE.

The operator indicated previously that an 1100-horsepower Loadcraft drilling rig built in the US is being used in the operation.

The rig was mobilised to Timor-Leste last year and could have started operations much earlier, but the Covid pandemic and regulatory approvals caused delays.

Timor-Leste's petroleum regulator, ANPM, said when the well spudded that it was the first onshore drilling campaign in 50 years, and the first onshore well since independence from Indonesia in 2002.
