Dewi Nurita, Jakarta – President Joko Widodo, or Jokowi, on Friday said the government planned to construct more nursery centers by pressuring palm oil and mining corporations to do so in an attempt to tackle climate change from the upstream sector. The government is aiming at pushing for roughly 30 nursery centers within the next three years.

"I will also be pushing and ordering every palm oil and mining corporation to build nurseries, which will help fix the environment where the mining sites and palm plantations are located," said the President after visiting the Rumpin Modern Nursery in Bogor on November 19.

According to the President, his visit to the nursery center showed the government's seriousness in managing the effects of climate change as he claimed such a facility was able to produce roughly 12 million seeds.

Environment and Forestry Minister Siti Nurbaya Bakar in a written statement stated that the government prepared six nursery centers in 2020 and will gradually build more in the future. The six are in West Java, East Kalimantan, North Sumatra, Labuan Bajo, Mandalika, and North Sulawesi.

President Jokowi visited the Rumpin Modern Nursery this morning with a number of foreign ambassadors, including US Ambassador to Indonesia Sung Yong Kim, British Ambassador Owen Jenkins, Canadian Ambassador Cameron MacKay, European Union Ambassador Vincent Piket, and World Bank Country Director Satu Kahkonen.
