Jakarta – Murder fugitive Hendra Subrata was flown to Jakarta on Saturday to serve his jail term after eluding justice for around 10 years, during which he stayed in Singapore.

According to the Indonesian embassy in Singapore, the 81 year old departed from Singapore at 6:45 local time aboard a Garuda plane.

The Indonesian Supreme Court has upheld his verdict and sentenced him to four years in jail.

There was no special security arrangement for Hendra, who went aboard the plane on a wheelchair, the embassy said, adding that the convict was "cooperative".

Hendra was found guilty of murdering his business partner Hermanto Wibowo by the West Jakarta District Court in 2010 and a year later the Supreme Court upheld the verdict, but he fled justice before the sentence was served.

According to the court document, he hit the victim with a dumbbell several times.

Indonesian prosecutors have issued an arrest warrant for the fugitive since September 2011, but his whereabouts remain unknown until he showed up at the embassy in February to renew his passport.

He used an alias, Endang Rifai, on his passport and embassy officials became suspicious after he lost temper and complained about the time-consuming interview.

"He wanted to complete the process sooner, citing a sick wife waiting at home," the embassy said in a statement.

He also argued that when his wife renewed the passport, the interview was much faster.

The argument led to a further investigation and embassy officials learned that the woman in question, Linawaty Widjaja, is the wife of Hendra Subrata, not Endang.

Hendra was allowed to go home to take care of his wife as the embassy also needed an extra time to investigate the case with law enforcement authorities and the immigration.

It was soon confirmed that Hendra has used an alias to conceal his identity, prompting the embassy to revoke his passport and alerted Singapore's Immigration and Checkpoint Authority regarding passport forgery.

Singapore's Foreign Affairs Ministry notified the embassy last week that Hendra aka Endang Rifai would be repatriated to Indonesia.

The two neighbors don't have an extradition treaty.
