Indonesia has so far deported 78 tourists who had been staying in Bali this year, an official said, with Russian nationals reportedly dominating the list.

According to Head of the Bali office for the Law and Human Rights Ministry, Jamaruli Manihuruk, the foreign nationals were deported for a variety of reasons – such as repeatedly violating health protocols – though most of them were deported after violating their stay permits.

"About five people were viral [on social media]. But those who didn't go viral, there were about seventy people. Most of them violated their stay permits, which were only for tourism but they were working here," Jamaruli said.

Indeed, several cases concerning foreigners in Bali have gone viral this year, eventually leading to the deportation of the people involved. In January, American digital nomad Kristen Gray went viral for a controversial Twitter thread where she encouraged people to move to Bali, and was subsequently deported from Indonesia. Just last month, a Russian woman named Se Leia was deported for donning a painted face mask and drawing massive backlash across Indonesia for her stunt.

Jamaruli said that Russian nationals dominated the list, while also explaining that many violated regulations because they were stressed out and unable to return home to their countries due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

"Because right now a lot of people are stressed out, imagine if you are in someone else's country without a job, it's easy to get stressed," he said.
