Police in Ciputat, South Tangerang have arrested a man accused of raping his 12-year-old stepdaughter, with the abuse reportedly having gone on for several months.

According to the police, the suspect, who is identified by his initials BGW (38), repeatedly raped his stepdaughter whenever they were alone at home.

BGW, who confessed to the sexual abuse, said he first raped his stepdaughter in December 2020.

"The stepdaughter is the rape victim. She is in sixth grade, 12 years old," East Ciputat Police Chief Jun Nurhaidah Tampubolon said yesterday.

BGW was arrested on Sunday evening after the victim told her aunt about the sexual abuse. Video footage taken prior to BGW's arrest on Sunday showed angry locals raiding his home and demanding justice for the victim.

Police have not specified charges against BGW, but rape of a minor is punishable by up to 15 years in prison under Indonesia's Child Protection Law, with an additional one-third of the eventual sentence if the perpetrator is a member of the victim's family.
