Dewi Nurita, Jakarta – Presidential Staff Deputy V, Jaleswari Pramodhawardani, called a stop to the public discourse alleging the government of attempting to pass a law that extends a presidential term to a third period by amending the 1945 Constitution.

Pramodhawardani asserts that President Joko Widodo or Jokowi himself has stated that he does not intend to amend the 1945 Constitution (UUD 1945).

"The president is committed to preserving the legacy of 'reformation.' Stop spewing the discourse that President Jokowi is intending to amend the Constitution for a third presidential period. Don't cause a fuss that disturbs public sobriety with hidden agendas," the Presidential Staff Deputy wrote in a written statement on March 16.

He then went on to defend that talks about extending the presidential term in office had been campaigned since the second presidential term of Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono or SBY and believes that it was intentionally brought to public with intent to disrupt political stability.

The suggestion to amend the 1945 Constitution was initially voiced by former Gerindra Party deputy Arief Poyuono which was then used by Ummat Party leader and former PAN senior member, Amien Rais. The latter strongly alleged that the Jokowi administration is taking steps to call for an MPR special session to amend the Constitution.
