Floods swamp 2,470 homes in South Pesisir, West Sumatra

Antara, Jakarta – Floods submerged 2,470 homes in six villages, Lengayang Sub-district, South Pesisir District, West Sumatra, as Batang Kambang River spilled over its bank.

"Flooding also damaged three houses and one bridge," Hendrajoni, South Pesisir District Head, said here on Saturday.

The six affected villages were Kambang, North Kambang, East Kambang, West Kambang, East Lakitan and Central Lakitan.

Hendrajono visited the flood-affected areas and handed over eight tons of rice and various other necessities such as kitchen equipment, baby essentials, toiletries and prayers necessities.

He reminded local residents to remain vigilant during the ongoing rainy season as rains to continue to fall.

On October 31, 2020, floods had also hit Lengayang following the overflowing of Batang Lengayang River, swamping 3,988 homes in four villages, namely North Kambang, West Kambang, East Kambang, and Kambang.

On Saturday (Jan. 9), floods and landslides hit Sumedang, West Java, claiming 11 lives and rendering eight others missing.

Floods also hit Garut and Bandung Districts in West Java, as well as Tanjungpinang in Riau Islands Province. On January 2, 2021, floods swamped 3,210 homes in Tanjungpinang.
