Jayanty Nada Shofa, Jakarta – Indonesia's Twitter has gone abuzz on Wednesday as the chaotic 2019 presidential election ends with the two rivaling pairs now in the same government after a recent reshuffle.
On Tuesday, President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo has announced six new ministers to sit in the ministerial cabinet. One of the new ministers is Sandiaga Uno, who was Jokowi's rivaling vice-presidential contender. Sandiaga replaces Wishnutama Kusubandio as the new Tourism and Creative Economy Minister. His running mate, Prabowo Subianto, had already joined the Onward Indonesia Cabinet much earlier as the defense minister.
The 2019 presidential election was marred with intense enmity between their die-hard supporters. The partisan camps even earned pejorative nicknames, namely "cebong" (tadpoles) for Jokowi's supporters and "kampret" (bats) for Prabowo's. Social media was filled with endless bickering, which continues to this day.
Although the cabinet shake-up rumors had already spread, the official announcement still broke Twitter with memes coming left and right.
User @abiyyu991223 tweeted two pictures comparing the situation in 2020 to 2019 by uploading a picture of the election ballot paper in which the competing pairs were on two different boxes. This time, the two pairs are in the same box. In reply to his tweet, user @rsmn_vr compared this ending to the election of a student council.
"This is like the election for the student council president. The one who loses will help the president as the secretary or treasurer. LOL," he tweeted.
In response to the same tweet, @utho_tweeted: "What's the point of a presidential election? They should have gone with hompimpah [traditional rock-paper-scissors] instead."
Twitter even joked how Prabowo-Sandi's move was inspired by Han Ji-Pyeong, a fictional character from the international hit South Korean series Start-Up. The series centers on young entrepreneurs in the start-up world, with the main characters caught in a love triangle.
User @Mariorizki posted a screenshot of a scene of Ji-Pyeong saying, "If you can't beat your enemy, then become their troop." He tweeted Prabowo-Sandi has taken up Ji-Pyeong's suggestion.
Whereas @QarisT compared the situation to a sales promotion of 'buy one, get two.'
Memes aside, many see the reconciliation in a positive light and consider it as a symbol of unity, including composer Addie MS.
"I like this picture. [I wonder] who made this. Finally, we should unite to build this country and nation. Forget our cebong-kampret labels. We are Indonesia. Thank you, President Jokowi," Addie said on his Twitter account.
