Heru Andriyanto, Jakarta – More than 2,000 Covid-19 patients have died since December 1 as Indonesia is entering the worst period of the outbreak halfway through the month. At this point last month, there were 1,279 coronavirus-related deaths.

The country has recorded a total of 18,956 deaths since the outbreak began, with a further 137 casualties on Monday, according to the Health Ministry data.

The virus has killed more than 100 people every day since November 22, the longest run of three-digit daily deaths. During the period, the country has beaten its own record in daily death toll three times, including the newest high of 175 deaths three days ago.

East Java has the highest casualty toll, totaling 4,920 as of Monday. It also reported Monday's highest death toll with another 41 deaths.

Jakarta comes next with a total of 2,950 deaths, 17 more from yesterday.

Daily deaths remain high in Central Java, which added 16 more for a total of 3,651.

West Java is the last province to record a four-digit number in Covid deaths, with a total of 1,072.

Confirmed cases

The surge in newly cases is slowing a bit with an additional 5,489 cases to take the country's total to 623,309.

Indonesia has been averaging 6,030 cases since the beginning of the month due to an upturn in key hotspots.

The country's four most populous provinces have seen a spike in newly cases since late November, most notably West Java where the average of daily case has nearly doubled.

West Java averages 1,021 cases month to date, second only to Jakarta. The province of 50 million people has recorded a total of 66,810 cases to rank last among the top four.

Jakarta has added more than 17,400 cases since Dec. 1 for a total of 154,005, more than any other provinces. The capital is climbing to the second peak after resurgence in mid-November.

It has registered 1,506 cases in the past 24 hours, the city's second-highest daily total since a record 1,579 on Nov. 21.

Newly cases are trending up in Central Java amid fluctuating daily numbers with the seven-day average outnumbering that of West Java. It has a total of 67,496 cases, an increase of 979 on the figure the previous day.

East Java extended its record-breaking run in seven-day average for the 16th day in a row. The total number of cases in the province topped 70,000 after adding another 713 cases.

South Sulawesi, East Kalimantan and Banten were the only provinces outside the top four to report three-digit figures in the day.

South Sulawesi saw an uptick in newly cases in late November and has since reported more than 100 cases per day. It has accumulated a total of 23,494 cases.

East Kalimantan has the biggest caseloads of the month outside Java by adding 2,848 cases in the first two weeks of December, bringing its total number of confirmed cases to 22,429.

It overtook Riau in the sixth place of worst-affected provinces.

Banten has recorded a total of 15,110 cases to catch up Bali who is ranked tenth with a total of 15,510 cases.
