Heru Andriyanto, Jakarta – The total number of coronavirus cases in Indonesia passed the 600,000 mark on Friday amid ongoing surge in new infections and daily deaths, which also saw a new record.

It took just 18 days for the country to reach the grim milestone since the number of cases reached half a million on Nov. 23.

It was the shortest period for Indonesia to add 100,000 more cases since the outbreak began, another indication that the country is now in its worst period of the pandemic.

There have been another 6,310 new cases in the day to bring the total number of cases to 605,243. The total number of active cases stands at 89,846 to reach yet another record high.

Indonesia has added more than 66,000 cases since the beginning of the month, including a dramatic single-day rise of 8,369 cases on Dec. 3.

A further 175 Covid-19 patients have died in the last 24 hours, the highest daily death toll since the outbreak. The previous high was 171 deaths reported only two days ago.

At least 18,511 people have died from coronavirus in the country since first cases were confirmed on March 2, according to the latest Health Ministry data.

The government tally doesn't include deaths from probable cases, suggesting that the official figure might have been underreported.

The daily death toll has been reaching three digits for the last 20 days. The previous longest run of three-digit daily death toll was 12 days, from Sept. 14 through 25.

Major hotspots

Jakarta topped 150,000 cases after adding 1,232 more cases in the 24-hour period. The seven-day average of newly cases in the capital has set a new record for the third day in a row.

Jakarta is in the lonely top among worst-affected provinces, with more than twice as many cases as in second-placed East Java.

The disease has infected a number of top city officials including Governor Anies Baswedan and Deputy Governor Ahmad Riza Patria. Province Secretary Saefullah was among a total of 2,900 people who had died from coronavirus in the capital.

East Java saw resurgence in new cases late last month and has since reported record-breaking weekly average in new cases.

It has been averaging 637 cases in the last seven days to take its total to 68,361 and further extend the record-breaking run that has begun since Nov. 29. East Java has beaten its own weekly average record for 13 consecutive days.

The province also reported its highest single-day death toll on Friday with 51 to take its total death toll to 4,791, more than any other provinces.

West Java returned to a four-digit daily number with 1,029 new cases, bringing the total number of cases to 64,072, including 1,046 deaths.

Central Java added 998 cases for a total of 64,608. It has the third-highest death toll with a total of 2,562 Covid deaths.

An upturn in newly cases also occurred in South Sulawesi, which for the first time reported a seven-day average of above 200 cases. It has recorded a total of 22,661 cases, the highest outside the four most-populous provinces in Java.

The total number of cases in East Kalimantan and Riau is now just below 22,000 but the surge is slowing a bit in both provinces.

West Sumatra has been averaging 119 cases in the past week, the lowest seven-day average since Sept. 17, to take its total to 21,503 cases.

Emerging hotspots

Central Kalimantan has reported daily number of more than 200 cases in recent days, including 216 cases on Friday.

It has a total of 7,674 confirmed cases to rank in the middle among the country's 34 provinces, but is dealing with among the highest number of active cases of the virus with more than 2,200.

Banten, just south of Jakarta, has added more than 1,500 cases month to date to get closer to the top ten with a total of 14,632 cases.
