Egi Adyatama, Jakarta – The Commission for Missing Persons and Victims of Violence (KontraS) on Tuesday strongly criticized the fatal shooting by police personnel against six members of the Islam Defenders Front (FPI) on Monday, Dec 7.
The commission believes police have acted unlawful killings against the FPI members who were reportedly escorting their leader Rizieq Shihab as they entered the Cikampek toll road during their journey
"This incident is a violation against the principle of a fair trial," said KontraS coordinator Fatia Maulidiyanti in a written statement today.
Fatia acknowledges that both police and the FPI have their own versions regarding what actually happened in the bloody night, but she asserts that the shooting itself cannot be justified.
Moreover, KontraS revealed that there were 29 incidents of extrajudicial killings for the past three months that killed 34 people. They also found that all the cases had a similar pattern; victims allegedly resisting officers and victims allegedly escaping the police.
"Those reasons are often used without investigating an incident with transparency and accountability," said the KontraS coordinator.
