Heru Andriyanto, Jakarta – Daily death toll in the Indonesian coronavirus outbreak has exceeded 100 in the last 13 days, the longest run since the outbreak began as newly confirmed cases continue to surge.

The country reported 124 more Covid deaths on Friday, bringing the total death toll to 17,479. The previous record was a span of 12 days from Sept. 14 through 25.

East Java has a share of 26 percent in the national death toll, with a total of 4,526 coronavirus-related deaths since the outbreak. It also reported the highest daily death toll with another 33 deaths on Friday.

Jakarta has recorded 2,755 deaths from more than 141,000 cases, but burial data suggested many more might have fallen victims to the pneumonia-like disease.

The capital city reported earlier that its main burial site for Covid victims in Pondok Rangon, East Jakarta, has run out of space and that new bodies were buried in existing graves.

The city data showed 9,085 people were buried under Covid-19 procedures from March 1 until Dec 2, Jakarta.

The central government excluded deaths in probable cases from the list of Covid deaths.

Confirmed cases

The country has recorded 5,803 cases in the last 24 hours, down from a single-day record of 8,369 a day earlier, to take its total to 563,680.

The total number of active cases passes the 80,000 mark for the first time since the outbreak began, representing 14.2 percent of the overall cases.

Four worst-affected provinces in Java remain the biggest contributors to the national tally.

Jakarta registered 1,032 cases to extend a streak of four-digit daily number since Nov. 13.

Central Java added 891 new cases for a total of 59,228. Central Java has been averaging just above 1,000 cases since it became the only province to report over 2,000 cases in a single day five days ago.

West Java recorded 992 cases, a day after it saw a dramatic rise of more than 1,600, bringing the total number of cases to 56,799.

East Java has the smallest daily number among the four giant provinces but it has been in a steady rise in the last two weeks. The province reported 564 new cases to take its total to 63,901, second only to Jakarta.

The seven-day average of newly cases in East Java stands at 468, its highest level since the outbreak began.

Other hotspots

South Sulawesi reported a three-digit daily number for the sixth day in a row, with another 180 cases for a total of 21,237.

The remaining five provinces in the top ten added between 79 and 231 cases in the day. Riau is closing in on South Sulawesi with a total of 20,799 cases, followed by West Sumatra (20,673), East Kalimantan (20,596), North Sumatra (15,924) and Bali (14,542).

Daily number of coronavirus cases in Banten, just south of Jakarta, has been above 100 for more than two weeks. The province has a total of 13,597 cases to rank 11th.

Papua registered 122 new cases to take its total to 12,001. The country's easternmost province reported a dramatic rise of 1,755 cases a day earlier, but the National Covid-19 Task Force later clarified it was an accumulation of unreported cases from the previous month.
