Jakarta passes new COVID-19 regulation aimed at punishing health protocol violators

Coconuts Jakarta - November 20, 2020

It's official. Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan has signed the Regional Regulation (Perda) on COVID-19 mitigation, through which those who refuse COVID-19 vaccination, when it becomes available, can be fined up to IDR5 million (US$354).

Anies signed the document on Nov. 12, which was uploaded to the Jakarta Provincial Government's official website yesterday. Head of the province's legal department, Yayan Yuhana, said the Perda came into effect as soon as it was signed, noting that there's a one-month grace period.

The Perda broadly outlines punishments for health protocol violations in the capital, such as an IDR5 million fine for those who refuse mandatory swab and/or rapid testing, and a fine of up to IDR7.5 million for anyone who claims the bodies of deceased COVID-19 patients by force, which has been a problem in Indonesia.

One of the most notable stipulations is Article 30, which says that anyone who refuses treatment and/or vaccination for COVID-19 is subject to a fine of up to IDR5 million.

There's also a fine of up to IDR5 million for confirmed COVID-19 patients who escape isolation or health facilities.
