M Rosseno Aji, Jakarta – The National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM) asked President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo to come up with solutions for the land dispute in Mandalika MotoGP Circuit areas, Central Lombok. The commission discovered that contractors had not made payment for a number of residents' plots of lands used for the racetrack.

"Komnas asks the Indonesian President to pay attention and give alternative solutions for this polemic given that human rights must be prioritized in the project development," said Komnas Commissioner, Beka Ulung Hapsara, in a written statement, Thursday, October 15, 2020.

Beka said his side received complaints from 15 residents demanding payment for 17 land plots in Sengkol Village and Kuta Village from the project developer, the Indonesian Tourism Development Corporation (ITDC). According to him, ITDC evicted the locals because they never felt to have sold their lands.

ITDC, Beka continued, used its management rights as legality to enforce an eviction. "Until now, three plots of land have been evicted, 14 other lands are in the schedule," he added.

Komnas conducted field monitoring on September 28-October 1 and October 12-15, and so recommended ITDC to immediately pay for the evicted lands.

Komnas HAM also asked the West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) Governor and ITDC to provide psychosocial recovery and rehabilitation to the three residents.

The NTB Governor, Beka argued, should protect the rights of the people affected by the construction of Mandalika MotoGP Circuit, while the ITDC was demanded to open dialogue with locals and ensure solutions for the land dispute.
