Lion Air backs idea to reinstate full passenger capacity despite pandemic

Tempo - September 23, 2020

Francisca Christy Rosana, Jakarta – Low-cost carrier Lion Air on Wednesday's webinar says it supports the idea of increasing passenger quota back to 100 percent amidst the government's pandemic-related physical restriction which curbs carriers to carry passengers only 70 percent of its total capacity.

"We are prepared if we are asked to collaborate with the Transportation Ministry's research and development body and the health ministry if we must conduct research related to 100 percent passenger capacity," said Lion Air Group director of operations, Wisnu Wijayant on Wednesday, Sept. 23.

The suggestion to review the passenger capacity limit was first pitched by aviation expert at the Air Power Center of Indonesia (APCI), Chappy Hakim, who asked regulators to re-evaluate the passenger capacity regulation without annulling aspects related to the COVID-19 pandemic protocols.

This suggestion refers to the use of high-efficiency particulate air filters used in airplane cabins, which is believed to be able to 99 percent filter particles and maintain a clean environment inside a passenger cabin.

Moreover, Lion Air's Wisnu also asked the government to quickly take action in supporting the sustainability of the Indonesian aviation industry, with one of it making available stimulus for the industry.
