Heru Andriyanto, Jakarta – The surge in coronavirus cases in Indonesia has reached a new level since the beginning of the month with daily total averaging 3,349 cases, in comparison to the average of 2,143 cases last month.

The country has accumulated 50,234 cases from Sept. 1 to the midpoint of the month, taking its total to 225,030 on Tuesday. The total number includes 8,965 deaths, 124 more from yesterday. It was the highest daily death toll in almost a fortnight.

The dramatic surge in daily cases is mostly driven by spiraling transmissions in Jakarta, the only province that has reached four-digit daily rises.

The central government has approved re-imposition of semi lockdown status in the capital and helped expand isolation facilities involving hotel rooms and additional capacity of the makeshift Covid-19 hospital in Kemayoran, Central Jakarta.

There are currently around 11,000 active cases of the virus in Jakarta and the city government obliges all infected persons to quarantine at government-appointed facilities under the new restriction policy.

Jakarta has recorded 1,076 new cases in the last 24 hours, bringing its total number of confirmed cases to 56,175. It shares the highest number of daily death toll with East Java, with 32 deaths for a total of 1,450.

Jakarta has added more than 16,000 cases month-to-date, more than three times the number of cases in East Java over the same period.

East Java has the second-highest number of cases, totaling 38,809 on Tuesday, but it leads the national Covid-10 death toll with 2,832 deaths. Daily average in East Java has been slowing slightly since the beginning of the month.

However, Central Java and West Java have seen a surge in daily rises.

Central Java has been averaging 276 cases since Sept. 1, as opposed to the daily average of 143 in August. It has a total of 18,111 cases, including 1,165 deaths. East Java, Jakarta and Central Java are the only provinces to have reported more than 1,000 deaths since the outbreak.

West Java reported 347 new cases for a total of 14,938.

Newest hotspot

Aside from the top four provinces, Riau has reported the biggest daily number throughout this month in a surge that has come only recently.

Riau's month-to-date average is 147 cases to emerge as the newest hotspot in the Indonesian outbreak. The province at the center of Sumatra Island has added 2,209 cases during the first half of the month, accounting for more than a half of its total 4,054 cases.

Aceh, on the northern tip of Sumatra, has seen three-digit daily total for six consecutive days, signaling a potential as the next hotspot. The province has a total of 3,032 cases as of Tuesday.

The daily total in Bali has slowed to 68 cases, the first time it saw cases below three digits in weeks, but overall it averages 145 cases in September. In total, the resort island has 7,380 cases to put it among the top eight provinces with the most cases.

Other hotspots like South Sulawesi, South Kalimantan, North Sumatra and East Kalimantan also saw escalating caseloads compared to the previous month.

South Sulawesi added 107 new cases for a total of 13,583, the biggest number outside the big four.

Coming up next is South Kalimantan with a total of 9,500 cases, but the province managed to keep daily average within two digits.

The transmission rate in North Sumatra has outpaced that of South Sulawesi and South Kalimantan. It reported 249 more cases on Tuesday, its highest rise in a single day, for a total of 8,808.

Overall, Indonesia has 55,000 active cases in all 34 provinces.
