Jakarta – Former Army chief of staff General (ret.) Pramono Edhie Wibowo, an in-law of former president Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono or SBY, died at a municipal hospital in Cianjur, West Java, on Saturday evening. He is 65.

Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono, the eldest son of SBY, confirmed the news in a statement. He said his uncle has succumbed to illness but didn't elaborate.

"We feel sorrow at the death of our uncle, General (ret.) Pramono Edhie Wibowo – the Army chief of staff (2011-2013) and the Democratic Party's head of advisory board for organization, recruitment and membership (2015-2020) – at 7.30 p.m. on Saturday due to his illness," Agus wrote.

The news came a year after former First Lady Ani Yudhoyono, Pramono's elder sister, died at a hospital in Singapore after a long battle with cancer. In August last year, SBY also lost his mother, Siti Habibah, who died at 87.

Pramono was at the helm of the army during the second term of the SBY presidency. Like many other retired generals, he entered politics post-military career by joining the Democratic Party, which was founded by SBY prior to his 2004 election as president. The party is now led by Agus.

Pramono, a native of Magelang, Central Java, was also a former commander of the Army's elite Special Forces unit, or Kopassus.

He is survived by wife Kiki Gayatri and two children – Ayu Ratna Pratiwi and Yusuf Putra Pramono.

Army spokesman Brig. Gen. Nefra Firdaus said Pramono will be buried at the Kalibata Heroes' Cemetery in South Jakarta on Sunday.

"In memory of the late General Pramono Edhie Wibowo as we are mourning his passing, flags will be flown at half-mast at all units of the Army for the next seven days starting Sunday," Nefra said in a statement.
