Jakarta – Rugaiya Usman, the wife of former Indonesian Armed Forces commander and senior statesman General (Ret.) Wiranto, passed away on Sunday afternoon in Bandung at the age of 67, the family confirmed.

Rugaiya and Wiranto, 78, married in February 1975 when he was stationed in Gorontalo, where the two first met. The couple remained together for 50 years of marriage and were blessed with two daughters and one son.

According to the family, Rugaiya's body was laid in repose at the family residence on Jalan Palem Kartika, in the Army Senior Officers Housing Complex in East Jakarta, and will be transported to Solo, Central Java, for burial on Monday morning.

Although not widely known to the public, Rugaiya was frequently seen accompanying her husband at official and public events over the decades, standing beside him throughout a long and high-profile military and political career.

Wiranto returns to gov't as presidential advisor

Wiranto currently serves as Special Adviser to President Prabowo Subianto for Political and Security Affairs. Over the course of his career, he has held some of the most influential posts in Indonesia, including Commander of the Armed Forces, Minister of Defense and Security, and Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs.

In earlier chapters of his service, he was aide to President Soeharto, commander of the Jakarta Military Regional Command, commander of the Strategic Reserve Command (Kostrad), and Army Chief of Staff.

On 10 October 2019, Wiranto survived a stabbing attack by a militant during a visit to Pandeglang, Banten, and later recovered after intensive medical treatment in Jakarta.
