Jakarta floods subsided 'within 25 minutes,' sewage system capable of handling heavy rain: official

Coconuts Jakarta - December 18, 2019

Yesterday, Jakarta saw the worst floods to hit the capital since the last rainy season, but officials say that they subsided quickly and the city is not at risk of prolonged rain water overflow.

Following heavy rain and thunderstorms yesterday afternoon, numerous areas in Jakarta were inundated with flood, including busy commercial zones such as Senayan, Kuningan and Jalan Gatot Subroto.

Jakarta Water Resources Agency Head Juaini Yusuf said yesterday's floods were unavoidable given the higher-than-usual rain water volume. "The water overflow subsided within 25 minutes at most [from when the rain stopped]," he told Liputan 6.

Juaini added that the city's sewage system is functioning well and the city should not be at risk of prolonged heavy floods.

Nevertheless, following yesterday's downpour, the Jakarta Metro Police Traffic Directorate released a list of 54 streets in Jakarta at risk of being submerged. Of the 54 streets, 20 of them are in South Jakarta, 13 are in North Jakarta, nine are in East Jakarta, seven are in Central Jakarta, and three are in West Jakarta.
