Jakarta – The Greater Jakarta Transportation Agency (BPTJ) is mulling whether to build an LRT or a cable car system to accommodate visitors to the popular tourist destination of Puncak in Bogor, West Java, to ease traffic congestion.

BPTJ head Bambang Prihartono said as a tourist area, Puncak was a center of economic growth, so that decent transportation services to resolve persistent gridlock in the area needed to be developed soon.

"The tourist area [Puncak] has been degraded because of traffic jams. The most important thing now is to develop mass transportation, either a cable car or an LRT system," Bambang said in Jakarta as quoted by kompas.com.

Although Puncak is among the top weekend destinations for residents of Greater Jakarta, the area is notorious for its horrendous traffic congestion.

Bogor administration has attempted to curb the congestion through various measures, including road expansion and the implementation of a 2-1 traffic scheme on the road to divide the traffic flow going to and returning from the popular tourist destination.

"So far, each transportation mode has run in its own system. It is the time for intermodal integration," he said, adding that the Finance Ministry had agreed to cooperate with train operator PT Kereta Commuter Indonesia and PT MRT Jakarta in such a development.

The agency has recorded that the current mobility rate in Greater Jakarta is about 88 million movements per day.

Therefore, Bambang said, in addition to developing transportation in Bogor, BPTJ also supported connectivity in each transportation corridor, including future construction of an LRT route from Tangerang, Banten, to Jakarta. (syk)
