Staff says Jokowi agrees on KPK empowerment via law revision

Tempo - September 9, 2019

Syailendra Persada, Jakarta – Presidential Staff Deputy IV Ali Mochtar Ngabalin said that President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo has agreed on the revision of the Corruption Eradication Commission Law known as the UU KPK.

He claims that the revision of the law overseeing the anti-graft agency is meant to strengthen the anti-graft agency.

"The president yearns on strengthening the agency by remodeling the laws overseeing it," said Ngabalin to Tempo on Sunday, September 8, who also said that the president prioritizes on preventing the acts of corruption.

Ngabalin also stated that no state-agency are allowed to defy the House of Representatives (DPR) and the government upon revising the law, which he said could only be done via judicial review.

As of Thursday, September 5, members of the House suddenly agreed with the draft law submitted by its Legislation Board which eventually turned it into a draft Law.

This move by the DPR of abruptly revising the law was opposed by the public and from the "Koalisi Masyarakat Sipil" (Civil Society Coalition) that deems the draft law a tool to weaken the KPK.
