Telly Nathalia, Jakarta – Indonesian Navy Chief Admiral Siwi Sukma Adji met his Australian counterpart Vice Admiral Michael Joseph Noonan in the Australian capital Canberra on Friday.

During their meeting, the two Navy chiefs agreed people-to-people contact will be paramount in boosting understanding and cooperation between the two neighboring countries.

Siwi and Noonan also discussed the latest developments in regional security, in particular maritime security, according to a statement from the Indonesian Navy.

Siwi's visit to Canberra followed Noonan's visit to Jakarta in November last year. The two also met in May this year on board the Australian Navy ship HMAS Canberra when it was anchored in Jakarta during the Indo-Pacific Endeavor 2019 event.

The Navy chiefs also agreed to organize more joint training and exercises between the two navies.

"The two chiefs realize that cooperation in the form of people-to-people interaction is more important in order to develop mutual understanding. [It could take the form of] education, training, exchanges, seminars or conferences," the statement said.

The Indonesian and Australian navies have already been involved in several joint trainings, such as the Cossoex Exercise New Horizon and the Ausindo Corpat.

They have also been participating in multilateral maritime cooperations such as the Indonesian-led Multilateral Naval Exercise Komodo and the Kakadu joint exercise.

During his Canberra visit, Siwi also met two other top officials of the Australian Defence Force, Vice Admiral David Lance Johnston and Vice Admiral Gregory Laurence Moriarty.
