Gov't mulls to review ITE law following Baiq Nuril case

Friski Riana, Jakarta – Presidential Staff Office Deputy V Jaleswari Pramodhawardani said the government would consider the urge to amend the law on electronic information and transaction (ITE Law) following the case incriminating Baiq Nuril.

"Recommendations from experts and NGOs are important for us to review it together," said Jaleswari in Bina Graha Building, Jakarta, Thursday, July 11.

He explained the law needs to be considered for a review in a bid to prevent the recurring case that harming innocent victims. "The point is, we share the same concern that we don't want a law hampering people to obtain justice," he added.

Previously, House of Representatives (DPR) Commission III member Nasir Djamil suggested President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo to evaluate the ITE Law as he considered as an 'elastic' policy.

Nasir opined a review on the regulation was an emergency issue following the case of Baiq Nuril. He and the Commission III expressed hope the law would be evaluated so it does not only protect people privacy but also provide justice for people who allegedly violating the law.
