Jakarta – A powerful 6.3-magnitude earthquake hit Sarmi, a district in Papua, early on Thursday morning. No casualty was reported, although dozens of houses in the area were damaged.

Tremors from the earthquake were also felt in the provincial capital of Jayapura, 176 kilometers east of Sarmi.

The National Disaster Mitigation Agency announced the epicenter of the earthquake was detected inland at a depth of 10 kilometers.

"Thirty-three houses were badly damaged. Families had to be evacuated to the homes of their relatives," agency spokeswoman Rita Rosita Simatupang said in a statement late on Thursday night.

She said rescue teams have also been dispatched to the nearby district of Ismara to find out if it was also affected by the quake.

Sarmi residents said the earthquake on Thursday morning lasted more than two minutes.
