Yustinus Paat & Christian Lee, Jakarta – Indonesian Solidarity Party (PSI) spokesman Dedek Prayudi has labeled presidential ticket Prabowo Subianto and Sandiaga Uno "the worst election candidates in history."
"It's not the 2019 election that is the worst in history, it is Prabowo and Sandiaga who are the worst election candidates in history. Elections are not a matter of candidates winning. Elections are a victory for the people. Do not betray the will of the people for your lust for power," Dedek said in Jakarta on Thursday.
Dedek says the Prabowo-Sandiaga camp has gone too far in their posturing. "Before the election, they blamed the polls. After the election, they blamed quick counts. Then they blamed the KPU [General Elections Commission] and the official count. [Every time they were] challenged to show their own data, they refused. Asked to challenge [the election result] in the Constitutional Court, they refused. Everything is wrong [to them], as if they own the truth," he said.
According to him, democracy guarantees that sovereignty is in the hands of the people, as stated in the constitution.
"The law, derived from the constitution, is an agreement that also regulates the rules on how people's aspirations are accommodated by the state, one of which is [through] elections," Dedek said.
The law also allows election candidates who are dissatisfied with the process and result of the election to voice their dissatisfaction to the Election Supervisory Agency (Bawaslu) or the Constitutional Court, the PSI spokesman said.
He considers the Prabowo-Sandiaga camp's rejection of the election result as their constitutional right. They should challenge it by filing a lawsuit in the Constitutional Court.
"But the calls for their supporters to attack the KPU, to refuse to recognize a legitimate government, to refuse to pay taxes, make [Prabowo and Sandiaga] the worst candidates in the history of this country's elections. We think this is no longer an attempt to delegitimize elections, but also the government and the law," Dedek said.
