Fikri Arigi, Jakarta – Director of the Legal Aid Institute for the Press (LBH Pers) Ade Wahyudin gave his response to the statement expressed by Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs Wiranto upon closing mass media that violate the law.

Wahyudin reminded the minister about the press dispute settlement mechanism overseen by the 1945 Constitution (UUD).

"The government should have set an example on putting forth existing legal mechanism to handle violations. Especially if we're talking about the media or press industries that are guaranteed by the constitution and has its own press dispute settlement mechanism," said Ade when Tempo reached him today, May 7.

Ade further asserts that the minister's intention represents his approach toward the issue through government power instead of imposing sanctions through the Press Council.

On Monday, May 6, the Coordinating Minister of Political, Legal, and Security Affairs discussed shutting down media, which include social media platforms for election-related violations.
