Jakarta – After several delays and a prolonged tug-of-war, the Gerindra Party and Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) submitted two names as recommendations for the next Jakarta deputy governor to Governor Anies Baswedan on Friday.
The recommendation letter states that the two longtime allies proposed PKS officials that have passed a recommendation hearing, Agung Yulianto and Ahmad Syaikhu. The letter has been signed by the parties both at the Jakarta provincial level and the parties' central executive boards, head of PKS Jakarta Syakir Purnomo said.
Representatives of Gerindra and the PKS were meant to meet with Anies on Friday to hand over the names directly. However, as Anies had gone to Singapore to visit former first lady Ani Yudhoyono–the wife of former president Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono– who is being treated at a hospital for blood cancer, the parties handed over the recommendation letter to city secretary Saefullah instead.
"We have completed the final recommendation letter and it has been accepted by Saefullah," Syakir said on Friday.
Syakir expressed the hope that Jakarta would soon have a new deputy governor to help Governor Anies manage the capital city. "We call for support from all resident so the process runs smoothly until the inauguration of a new deputy governor," he added.
With the official submission of the names, Anies will then forward the names to the Jakarta Council, which will hold plenary session to decide which of the two nominees will be named the new deputy governor.
The post has been left vacant since August last year following the resignation of former deputy governor Sandiaga Uno, who is running for vice president alongside Gerindra Party chairman Prabowo Subianto in this year's presidential election. (rin)
