Budiarti Utami Putri, Jakarta – The Prabowo-Sandiaga Uno campaign team (BPN) spokesman Dahnil Anzar Simanjuntak announced the team will pay attention to the issue of potential non-voters, known by the term Golput.
According to Dahnil, the BPN team has already obtained the poll results of potential non-voters from the swing voters group. Their internal survey in November 2018 recorded that this group consists up to 15 percent of the population at the legal age to vote.
"That will receive special attention from our team," said Dahnil to Tempo on Thursday, January 24.
However, Dahnil does not deny that the emergence of non-voters is a form of criticism against the country's democratic system and the presidential and vice presidential candidates in the 2019 presidential race.
"As a challenger, we will voice their hopes that might not be found in the incumbents," he said.
Arief Maulana, Director of the Legal Aid Jakarta (LBH Jakarta), predicts that the number of non-voters will rise in this year's presidential election. He argues that this global phenomenon is one of the people's way to express their political stand.
He said that many people refusing to cast their vote are generally driven by disappointments for the numerous human rights violations, corruption, and the unfulfilled civil rights.
