Jakarta – City-owned PT MRT Jakarta and the Jakarta Military Command on Tuesday signed a memorandum of understanding that stipulates for support from the military for the MRT's operational security. The memorandum will last for five years.

"The MRT's first phase [from Lebak Bulus in South Jakarta to Hotel Indonesia traffic circle in Central Jakarta] will open in March. We hope that we have full support from the the Jakarta Military Command," MRT Jakarta president director William Sabandar said as reported by kompas.com on Tuesday.

William went on and claimed that the MRT had several strategic assets that require strict supervision, especially state-of-the-art technology applied along the first phase.

He mentioned Lebak Bulus depot, the powerhouse (receiving substation) in Sambas Park Blok M, transition section (from elevated lane to underground lane) in Senayan, all of which are in South Jakarta. William also mentioned 13 MRT stations, cooling towers and ventilation towers.

Jakarta Military commander Maj. Gen. Joni Supriyanto said he is committed to ensuring the security around the operation of the MRT's first phase and the construction of its second phase – from Hotel Indonesia traffic circle in Central Jakarta to Kota in West Jakarta.

"This is our commitment as well as part of the Army's program that is aimed at ensuring national development runs smoothly," Joni said. (vla)
