Celvin Moniaga Sipahutar, Jakarta – President Prabowo Subianto on Thursday launched a national financial welfare council to expand the government's focus from increasing access to financial services to improving the financial well-being of Indonesian households.
The National Council for Financial Welfare (DNKK), formerly known as the National Council for Financial Inclusion, was launched during the 2026 National Coordination Meeting of Regional Financial Access Acceleration Teams (TPAKD) at the Jakarta International Expo in Kemayoran, Central Jakarta.
Chief Economic Affairs Minister Airlangga Hartarto said the name change and expanded mandate were stipulated in Presidential Regulation No. 42/2026, shifting the government's emphasis beyond indicators such as bank account ownership toward improving financial conditions at the family level.
"When we talk about the macroeconomy, what the president is launching here is the economy of each family. The smallest economic unit in our society is the family," Airlangga said.
The DNKK operates directly under the president, with Airlangga serving as executive chair. Financial Services Authority (OJK) chief Friderica Widyasari Dewi, Bank Indonesia Governor Destry Damayanti, Home Affairs Minister Tito Karnavian and Finance Minister Suahasil Nazara serve as executive deputy chairs.
Friderica said the council was established in response to Prabowo's directive to ensure Indonesians have opportunities to improve their own welfare and that of their families.
The launch marks a policy approach to financial inclusion, which traditionally emphasizes access to formal financial services such as bank accounts, credit and payment systems. Financial well-being also encompasses households' ability to manage daily expenses, build savings, access suitable financing and withstand unexpected financial shocks.
The DNKK is one of several national advisory and policy bodies operating under Prabowo's administration, alongside the Presidential Advisory Council (Wantimpres), chaired by Pratikno, and the National Economic Council (DEN), led by Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan.
At Thursday's meeting, the government also symbolically handed over financing agreements and credit facilities distributed between August and October 2026. A total of 343 financial services institutions provided Rp 53.15 trillion ($2.9 billion) in financing to 2,106,401 borrowers.
Recipients represented a range of occupations, including fishermen, ride-hailing drivers, coffee farmers and traders.
