RRI, Jakarta – An Indonesian academic has urged the government to examine the factors driving citizens to give up their nationality after official data showed that nearly 8,000 Indonesians applied to renounce their citizenship over the past five years.
According to the Law Ministry, the applications were submitted for various reasons, including marriage, employment opportunities, and the prospect of building a new life abroad.
Dian Azmawati, a lecturer in international relations at Muhammadiyah University of Yogyakarta, warned that the trend could increase the risk of brain drain, with Indonesia gradually losing skilled and talented workers to other countries.
"Whenever large numbers of young people choose to move overseas and even consider changing their citizenship, the government should regard it as an important signal, particularly if it occurs over a relatively short period," Dian said in a recent interview with state broadcaster RRI.
She noted that international migration is a long-standing global phenomenon driven by historical, economic, and social factors. Advances in transportation, communications, and digital technology have made it easier for people to learn about educational and career opportunities abroad and to relocate.
According to Dian, globalization has expanded access to information about living and working overseas, encouraging more young Indonesians to seek opportunities outside the country.
She said the government should conduct a deeper assessment of the factors behind the trend and review policies to ensure Indonesia remains an attractive place for young professionals to study, work, and build their careers.
Earlier this month, President Prabowo Subianto said Indonesians who believe the country's future is bleak are free to seek opportunities elsewhere, while urging those who remain to work together to build a more prosperous nation.
"Those who are doubtful can stay at home. If you believe Indonesia has no future and want to look for another country, please do. No one is stopping you," Prabowo said on July 12.
