Jakarta – The Indonesian Military Police Headquarters (Puspom TNI) has announced the arrest of four suspected perpetrators of last week's acid attack on human rights advocate Andrie Yunus of the Commission for Missing Persons and Victims of Violence (Kontras).

All four are reportedly members of the TNI's Strategic Intelligence Agency (BAIS).

Puspom commander Maj. Gen. Yusri Nuryanto told a press conference on Wednesday that the suspects, identified only by their initials NDP, SL, BHW and ES, were currently being held "at Puspom TNI for further investigation".

Yusri added that investigators were still working to uncover the motive behind the attack and are processing formal reports, including gathering witness testimonies and requesting a "visum et repertum", in this case a medical examination report from Cipto Mangunkusumo National Central General Hospital.

Separately on Wednesday, the Jakarta Police's criminal investigations director Sr. Comr. Iman Imanuddin said authorities believed that more individuals could be involved in the acid attack on March 12, including two other suspects identified as BHC and MAK.

"We are also analyzing other scientific evidence to support the investigation," Iman said, adding that the police and the military would be coordinating the findings of their investigations.

Kontras' head of impunity monitoring Jane Rosalina said Andrie remained in intensive care at Cipto Mangunkusumo hospital in Senen, Central Jakarta. She added that although he was in a stable condition, Andrie had suffered severe burns on his face, right eye, hands and chest.

Last Thursday's attack occurred as Andrie was riding his motorcycle along Jl. Salemba I in Central Jakarta, when two unknown men on a motorbike threw acid at him.

The incident sparked outrage from civil society groups and fellow rights activists, who have condemned the attack as an attempt to silence government critics.
