Dian Rahma Fika, Jakarta – Chair of the Commission III of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR), Habiburokhman, said he will look into the alleged assault of 50-year-old Sudrajat, an es gabus (a traditional Indonesian ice treat) seller from Depok, by a police and a military officer.

"Insyaallah, we will study the case this afternoon. I will contact the relevant police station and the prosecutor's office regarding this," said Habiburokhman on Wednesday, January 28, 2026.

According to the Gerindra Party politician, not all issues require a public hearing, stating that some problems could be resolved "by phone."

Albeit no statement has been released regarding the assault case, Habiburokhman assures that DPR will ensure legal protection for Sudrajat.

"One thing for sure, we do not want any citizen to be treated unfairly," he said.

Sudrajat, 50, claimed to have suffered trauma after allegedly being assaulted by members of the Indonesian military and Indonesian police. The incident occurred when the officers accused the ice treats Sudrajat was selling of being made with hazardous materials.

Sudrajat was selling in the Kemayoran area, Central Jakarta, on Saturday, January 24, 2026, when the incident occurred.

According to Sudrajat, the soldier and police officer were accusing him of selling es gabus made from polyurethane (PU foam) or mattress sponges. The accusation led to his assault.

When met at his residence, Sudrajat said he was baffled by the accusation. During 30 years of his selling the ice treats, none had made a complaint against him. "This only happened last Saturday," said Sudrajat on Tuesday, January 27, 2026.

Jakarta Metro Police's chief of public relations, Grand Commissioner Budi Hermanto, issued an apology at the Jakarta Metro Police Headquarters on Wednesday, January 28.

"We, from the Jakarta Metro Police, apologize if in the actions taken by our personnel, namely the Bhabinkamtibmas (Public Security and Order Supervising Officers), there was a less appropriate or inaccurate perception," said Budi.

Budi emphasized that the Jakarta Metro Police never intended to hinder or obstruct the activities of micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs). However, he acknowledged the public's disappointment over the assault. "Whatever it is, we understand the public's disappointment. Therefore, we apologize and will investigate the incident," he said.

Currently, the Professional and Security Division (Propam) of the Jakarta Metro Police is investigating alleged ethics violations or overreach of authority by the police officer who accused the es gabus seller.
