Servio Maranda, Jakarta – Indonesia's state-owned tin producer PT Timah Tbk reported financial losses amounting to Rp2.25 billion after a violent demonstration by tin miners damaged several facilities at the company's head office on Jenderal Sudirman Street, Pangkalpinang, Indonesia, on Monday, October 6, 2025.

PT Timah's Corporate Secretary Division Head, Rendi Kurniawan, said the losses were recorded in the company's Loss Event Database (LED) following an internal assessment of the incident.

"Several damaged facilities are currently under repair. Our preliminary estimate indicates losses of around Rp2.25 billion," Rendi told Tempo on Wednesday, October 22, 2025.

He added that the company is still awaiting the final loss assessment from a Loss Adjuster, a professional tasked with evaluating financial impacts from such events.

"Significant damage occurred mainly in the main building. Other buildings within the office complex and government housing areas were not severely affected. We are also assessing damages to assets owned by the Pangkalpinang City Government," he said.

The protest was triggered by the discontent of tin miners from several regions on Bangka Island who opposed the operations of the Nanggala Task Force, created by PT Timah, and the Halilintar Task Force, formed by the government to curb illegal tin mining activities.

The miners complained that the task forces' operations disrupted their livelihoods, as many tin collectors were reportedly afraid of being arrested and stopped purchasing tin ore. Those who continued to buy the ore did so secretly, often at prices far below market value.

The demonstration escalated into chaos, resulting in injuries among protesters, police officers, journalists, and civilians after security forces fired tear gas. Several traders and children were also affected when the gas spread into nearby residential areas and schools.
