Tangerang student dies after alleged police brutality during protest

Vedro Imanuel Girsang, Jakarta – A student from Tangerang, Andika Lutfi Falah, has died after allegedly being beaten by police during a protest. The 11th-grade student passed away at AL Mintohardjo Hospital on Monday, September 1, 2025, after being in a coma for three days.

Andika's brother, Pangestu, confirmed the death, stating, "Yes, it's true (he passed away)." He added that Andika was buried yesterday afternoon near the family's home and that the family has come to terms with it.

"The entire family has come to terms with it," Pangestu said via an instant messaging application.

According to the Street Paramedics Coalition, Andika was in the ICU for three days before he died. He was allegedly assaulted by police during a demonstration on Friday, August 29, 2025. The assault left him with a fractured skull from a blunt object.

Prior to his death, Andika Lutfi Falah had been in a coma for three days. "He had been lying in the ICU for three days," said Joninda, a representative of the Street Paramedics Coalition, on Monday, September 1, 2025.

Based on information gathered by Tempo, Andika was allegedly assaulted by the police while participating in a demonstration on Friday, August 29, 2025. Andika suffered a fractured skull after being struck. He was a student in the 11th grade at State Vocational High School (SMK) 14 in Tangerang Regency.

According to the head of the neighborhood association where the victim's family lives, Andika suffered injuries to the back of his head from a blunt object. The head injury left Andika unconscious.

"When he arrived at the hospital, he was already in critical condition and was immediately admitted to the ICU," said Sugiono, the head of the neighborhood association, as reported by Antara.

Sugiono mentioned that Andika's parents were unaware he had taken part in the protest in Jakarta, as he had only informed them about routine school activities. The family has decided not to pursue a legal investigation. "The family has chosen not to pursue this case," said Sugiono on Monday, September 1, 2025.
