Anastasya Lavenia Y, Jakarta – Bank Indonesia's (BI) Consumer Survey for May 2025 shows that the Job Availability Index has fallen into the pessimistic zone, reaching a level of 95.7. This marks a drop from April 2025's figure of 101.6, which was still in the optimistic territory (above 100).

The decline drew attention from Awalil Rizky, a senior economist at the Bright Institute. "It is the lowest value and the first time entering the pessimistic zone in more than the last 3 years," Awalil said in a written statement on Sunday, June 15, 2025.

According to BI's survey chart, the index has not reached 100 since January 2023. Although it showed a slight recovery toward the end of 2024, the trend has been consistently declining since December.

When broken down by educational background, high school graduates recorded the lowest index at 92.0, followed by diploma holders at 95.8. In contrast, respondents with a bachelor's or postgraduate degree remained optimistic, scoring 101.0 and 105.8, respectively.

The survey also assessed the public's outlook for the next six months through the Job Availability Expectation Index, which stood at 123.8 in May 2025.

"Although the majority of them see job opportunities in the next six months, their level of confidence is relatively low compared to previous survey results," said Awalil.

This weakening in the Job Availability Index contributed to the overall decline in the Consumer Confidence Index, which dropped to 117.5 in May, down from 121.7 in April.

Despite the decrease, Bank Indonesia's Executive Director of the Communication Department, Ramdan Denny Prakoso, stated that consumer confidence remained intact, supported by the Current Economic Condition Index (CECI) and the Consumer Expectation Index (CEI).

"The CECI and CEI were recorded at 106.0 and 129.0, respectively. Although lower than the previous month's indices, which were recorded at 113.7 and 129.8," said Denny in an official statement on Thursday, June 12, 2025.
