Nandito Putra, Jakarta – The Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, Bahlil Lahadalia, mentioned that Indonesia is set to utilize nuclear power plants by 2030, as laid out in the Power Supply Business Plan for the period of 2025-2030.

"The nuclear power plants will be operational by 2030 or 2032. So, we must prepare all of the relevant regulations on nuclear plants," Bahlil said while heading the National Energy Council (DEN) meeting, quoted from a written statement on Monday, April 21, 2025.

The General Chair of the Golkar Party stated that the business plan is being finalized and will later be submitted to President Prabowo. The energy business plan also incorporates matters on the Energy Buffer Reserves.

Prior to this, DEN member Agus Puji Prasetyono revealed that there are 29 potential locations for nuclear plant construction in Indonesia, estimated to generate between 45 and 54 gigawatts of electricity.

These plants will be located outside of Java, in order to develop the economies in the Central and Eastern regions of Indonesia.

Agus added there are three vital aspects to consider by the government before constructing the nuclear plants: ensuring a tsunami-free location, a safe distance from volcanoes, and away from active fault lines.

He also identified four priority areas for the construction, namely West Kalimantan, Bangka Belitung, Southeast Sulawesi, and Halmahera in North Maluku. These locations are situated in earthquake-prone zones, posing their own challenges.

Nevertheless, Agus stated that building nuclear power plants in earthquake-prone zones is a key step towards achieving Indonesia's future economic targets. "How to build nuclear plants in earthquake-prone locations? That is a challenge we need to face," he said.
