Race for KPK leadership sees low number of applicants

Alifia Sekar, Jakarta – With registration for the Corruption Eradication Commission's (KPK) next leaders closing soon on Monday, the number of candidates applying for the job is so far lower than in 2019.

As the incumbent five KPK commissioners – and all five supervisory board members – will end their terms in December, the government-sanctioned selection committee late last month opened registration for those looking to become KPK leaders or to sit on the supervisory council for the next five years.

After registration closes on Monday at midnight, a nine-member selection panel, which was set up by President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo in May, will vet candidates and present their names to the House of Representatives for confirmation.

The panel's deputy chairman Arif Satria told The Jakarta Post that as of Monday afternoon, there were 244 candidates for the KPK's top posts who have submitted all the required paperwork on the panel's website.

This number is lower than in 2019, when a total 376 candidates applied for the job. The selection committee said there were 146 applicants for the five seats on the supervisory board.

The panel will conduct screenings for the documents submitted by the applicants until next Monday. "The results of the administrative screening will be announced on July 24," Arif said.
