Kemlu.Go.Id, Jakarta – The Director General of Information and Public Diplomacy (DG IDP), together with the Vice President of the Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TIKA) Turkiye, Rahman Nurdun, co-chaired the Emerging Development Partners (EDP) meeting in Bali on Tuesday, June 11, 2024.
The meeting was attended by 38 participants from 9 emerging donor countries, including Indonesia, and 3 international organizations.
The inaugural meeting initiated by Indonesia marks the first gathering among emerging donor countries. This meeting was spurred by the increasing trend of developing countries' active role in international development cooperation over the past two decades, aimed at strengthening the position of Global South countries.
DG IDP, Siti Nugraha Mauludiah, emphasized that "the initiative to establish a forum for emerging donor countries is crucial to address common challenges and strengthen the position of emerging donors in more impactful international fora."
"The EDP meeting underscores the importance of collaboration among developing countries to achieve sustainable development goals (SDGs)," she said, as quoted from the official website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The keynote speaker, former Minister of National Development Planning, Bambang Brodjonegoro, highlighted that the economic growth of emerging donor countries currently influences the global development agenda. Therefore, emerging donor countries need to collaborate, especially in achieving SDGs, with a priority focus on issues such as poverty alleviation, inequality, and climate change.
Subsequent discussions in Sessions I and II on Repositioning EDP's Roles in Multilateral Fora, and Exploring Innovative Joint Initiatives among EDPs, began with presentations from Carlos M. Correa, Executive Director for the South Centre; and Adnan H. Aliani, Director of Strategy and Programme Management Division of UNESCAP, as Lead Discussants.
During the discussions in both sessions, delegates explored various innovations to strengthen the position of emerging development partners in global development. EDP meeting delegates expressed hope that EDP could become an annual platform that strengthens collaboration and partnerships among emerging donor countries, and enhances their contributions to achieving sustainable development goals on the global stage.
