Jakarta – Former lawmaker and member of the People's Consultative Assembly (MPR) Permadi Satrio Wiwoho passed away on Wednesday at the age of 84.

A statement from the family said he died at his private residence on Pangadegan Barat Street in Pancoran, South Jakarta.

Permadi spent most of his political career with the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P), which helped him win a seat in the House of Representatives in 2004-2009. However, he later joined the Great Indonesia Movement Party (Gerindra), where he served as a member of the advisory council.

The family said his body was laid to rest at San Diego Hills Public Cemetery in Karawang, West Java.

Permadi was instrumental in establishing the Indonesian Consumer Protection Foundation (YLKI) in 1973, the country's first such organization.

"We're sorry to hear of the passing of Permadi, who played a pivotal role in the founding of YLKI in 1973. He chaired the foundation from 1979 to 1982," YLKI said in a social media post.

Born in Semarang on May 14, 1940, Permadi was famous for always dressing in black attire on any occasion.

"Until a few months ago, Permadi remained active and attended party meetings," Gerindra politician Habiburokhman said.

In 2019, Permadi was reported to the police for alleged treason after he delivered a speech against President Joko Widodo's government, but he was never prosecuted.
