Teguh Adi Prasetyo, Jakarta – Trade Minister Zulkifli Hasan, known as Zulhas, has announced a nationwide investigation into suspected fraud in the filling of 3-kilogram LPG gas canisters.

Preliminary findings indicate a shortfall of gas in each canister by 200 to 700 grams, causing concern among consumers.

The investigation is scheduled to span the next two to three months and will encompass various provinces across Indonesia.

"We initiated this yesterday, starting with Jakarta. Over the next two to three months, we will extend our scrutiny to every province," stated Zulhas to the press at an LPG filling station (SPBE) in North Jakarta on Monday.

Zulhas stressed that strict measures would be taken against distributors found guilty of fraud. Initially, administrative penalties will be imposed. However, if criminal activity is uncovered, the Ministry will collaborate with law enforcement agencies without hesitation.

In addition to addressing distributor malpractice, Zulhas advised consumers to exercise caution when purchasing the subsidized gas canisters. He urged consumers to weigh the canisters before purchase to verify the correct quantity.

"These canisters typically weigh around 5 kilograms when empty. Once filled with 3 kilograms of gas, they should weigh 8 kilograms. However, the average weight here is between 2.4 or 2.3 kilograms, indicating a shortfall of 600 to 700 grams. Consider the scale of this issue daily. At this particular LPG station, we distribute 14,000 canisters every day," he highlighted.

Of the 800 SPBEs nationwide, the Ministry of Trade has initiated investigations in Jakarta, Banten, and West Java. Initial findings from these investigations identified 11 SPBEs engaged in fraudulent practices related to filling 3-kilogram LPG gas canisters.

The Minister disclosed potential state losses resulting from fraudulent practices aimed at reducing the content of 3-kilogram LPG gas canisters. Based on available data, annual losses are estimated to amount to Rp 1.75 billion per SPBE.
